Clash of the Titans

28 Sep
y’now… since PAX I don’t think I’ve been this amped up about gaming news. Seems that Marvel and Cryptic Studios have not only buried the hatchet but they’ve gone and bought a love cabin up in the hills.

If you’re ot aware of the intricacies of what I’m talking about then you need to read more stuff on the net instead of staring at Hentai. Marvel an Cryptic will be doing an MMO.

Yup the brains from CoH wil be designing for Marvel. Match made in heaven… and it gets better. It’ll run on both the Xbox 360 and Vista!! Excellsior!!

Well knowing the work that Cryptic has done wit CoH and CoV – the actual MMO aspects should be interesting.  I suspect it’ll be considerably different than CoX games – but the team in charge has a good heritage in the Genre.  Hero games are fundamentally very different than a WoW or other Fantasy type environment.  In those games you may spend hours building a team – locatng your mission – and then finally getting into the fray.  In a SuperHero environ the nature is to accellerate that considerably – for one thing every starts out with a power, which you naturally have to learn to build and control.  Even at level one – you have a level of Umph often denied you in other types of MMO, granted it’s sometimes humorously weak.  But the game begins and has a goal that is considerably different from this initial starting point onward.

I’ll be interested to see how they handle it from the Marvel perspective – which should be even more accellerated.  The difficult part, which took them 2 years in COH to get a handle on was how to implement a balanced powerset that treaded the line between Uber and Mensch carefully.  Even today – there are issues if you’ve played one of their overly nerf’ed tanks.   Trust me – no one is going to put up with a Hulk that can’t take on even a single Lt. level solo.  Hulk SMASH!!  And the idea of having the Thing need a healer to go into a fight … hehehe… that crap will not fly with the fans.

By the same token – having a Dr. Strange that can lock down 9 guys – is a bit over the top, or a Ghost Rider who locks down 10 mob and burns’em will require tweaking backwards.  It took me almost a year and a half of hard core play to get my MC/FF to 50, and when they did they de-nerfed him and he’s probably one of the most powerful 50s I know of when played right.  My level 36 Fire/Rad handles mobs that are +4 (with a few insps) solo.  There’s still balance yet to be done and people complain it’s over nerfed.   Luckily they’ve heard these complaints and know how to address them.
